George Hinton was born in Hanover ON and began his Cadet career at the age of 13 by joining RCSCC Warspite in Kitchener ON. In 1974, his family moved to Richmond and he joined RCSCC Bicknell. In 1975 having developed a keen interest in aviation he transferred to 655 Richmond Squadron RCACS.
In the spring of 1977, he joined the primary reserve and was sworn into the 12th Service Battalion which at that time was parading at the Air Movements Unit building on Sea Island. As a member of the battalion he was posted to Germany as an MP attached to the 4 MP Platoon and participated in the NATO Exercise REFORGER. His last callout was to serve as an MP at Vernon Army Cadet Camp. He retired from the reserves in 1984.
While his children were growing up, he became an active member of Scouts Canada and spent 15 years as a leader. He was awarded the Medal for Good Service and the Medal for Long Service.
In 2007, as a former member of 655 Richmond Squadron RCACS, he was asked to help the organizing committee with the Squadrons 50th anniversary. He stayed on afterwards as a civilian volunteer working in supply. He again enrolled in the Canadian Forces and was sworn into the Cadet Instructor Cadre in July 2009. During his time with 655 Richmond Squadron RCACS, held several positions including Level 1 training officer, Supply Officer and Administration Officer. In April of 2017, he became the commanding officer of 655 Richmond Squadron RCACS.
After his term as CO was over, he became the Commanding Officer of 777 Squadron RCACS and following that became Commanding Officer of 692 BCIT Squadron RCACS.
In his personal life he is married and has a blended family of 5, three of whom have been members of 655 Richmond Squadron. He is a graduate of Kwantlen Polytechnic University and currently works for Micro-X as the Sales and Service Manager for the Americas. He is an avid supporter of veteran’s associations and is a member in good standing of the Army Navy Airforce Association Unit 284, the Royal Air Force Association and the Royal Air Force Club.
Upon George’s retirement with DND, he became a member of the Air Cadet League of Canada, BC Provincial Committee, and was approached to become a Director, which he graciously accepted.
